7-1/2 Years...

 7-1/2 Years...

How do I even begin?

The amount of water that has passed under my life bridge during that span of time is immense. I've gained knowledge through experience and lost friends, pets, and family. And some of my sanity. Two things I haven't lost are my girth and the resulting beard. I've not given up on trimming down and will continue to wear this face mane until I drop some poundage!

Maybe I'll pick this up again. Perhaps not.

Big and Bearded ... Is It Just The New Me?

Ermahgerd, it's the hurlidurs agin.

Still fat and thus, still hairy. It is also the holidays, which means it isn't easy to maintain, let alone lose, weight. I have been ebbing and flowing with 5-6 lbs. for some time now. I get close and then my weight creeps back. Still trying, but two years into the beard penance, it is getting old.

No snowboarding yet. But there has been decent enough snow now for what, a week? Promise that I am taking Smarty Pants up on Sunday.

New bikes... new bikes.... they fill my dreams and haunt my waking hours.

The Beard Challenge — Day XXXX

Weight: 162

Time just sorta rolls on, don't it?

My cholesterol is high. My backfat is starting to roll. I think I have another chin under the beard. None of this is shocking since my body fat is about 21%. Running sucks more than ever and I can't do a single pull up for the first time I can remember.

You would think that it would be enough to elicit major changes. But so far it hasn't. Doesn't mean that I am quitting, either.

This has been the first week of revised eating habits and, other than a couple of desserts, it has gone well. I have done some workouts, and actually got on the mtb for the first time in forever. (It was pathetic.)

My move to sloth didn't happen overnight, and I can't expect to change that quickly. It's coming. It is, as I have said before, just a matter of ingraining the changes I need to make to get me back to where I was. Or better.

The Beard Challenge — Day XXX

Weight: 160.4

As I run out of projects to work on at home, I find that I am compelled to do other things. Wii Harry Potter for example. Beat it yesterday. That's right, I did it. Well, Smarty Pants and I did it. Kid is ... smart and saved my bacon a couple of times by easily figuring out sections I was struggling with. Okay, I should have been doing something more active. But we were having FUN! And having fun with my best little friend is vastly more important than almost everything.

All is not lost. Thanks to watching what I am eating and a moderate amount of exercise, I am down a tenuous pound. Which leaves only five more to go. The same five I have needed to lose for months. It'll happen.

The Beard Challenge — Day XXIV

Weight: 161.2

I need to pick it up or else I will be forced to increase my knowledge of Roman numerals.

The reason my weight has not ebbed is because I have done NOTHING to reduce it. Nothing. Well, I ran one day last week. Why? No good reason. I've been doing stuff like finishing out the basement, removing some wallpaper, and trying to save my zucchini plant from whatever is killing it. But I still have time to exercise. Like I said, no good excuse. So, I still have this rotten beard. But I am running out of shit to do, which is awesome.

Like I keep saying, it is about habit. Breaking old ones and starting new ones. I would like to say that signing up for a race would motivate me, but I doubt it would. Not to any degree anyway. It just has to come from inside and I guess that I just haven't found the mojotivation to get after it adequately. That said, I am starting to get a fat roll on my back. Like sort of higher up, below my lats. If that, plus my backfat, plus this hot, sweaty dust collector on my face isn't enough then I can't imagine what will be.

I'll think about it whilst running today, weather permitting. It has been a mild summer...

The Beard Challenge — Day XVIII

Weight: 161.8

I will run today. I will bike tomorrow. I will bike Sunday.

In between basement painting sessions, of course.

Biking will be much easier now that my road bike is all freshly cabled and bar taped. Work performed by yours truly. I say that biking will be easier now, but it isn't like I couldn't have ridden my mountain or cross bikes... I also installed a shorter stem in the hopes of being just a little more comfortable. I still think that both my road and cross bikes are too long for me. 53.5 cm top tubes and my short torso just don't match. I am now using 90mm stems on both. Maybe if I rode more my flexibility would improve, but a couple of years ago when I rode LOTOJA I don't recall it being much better. I miss my Lemond Zurich, that bike fit well.

Nothing new to report. Sloth has been somewhat effectively offset by menu choices. Seven pounds seems so within reach. Just working on consistency. I finally did one thing that will help: I wrote up a weight routine. Now, in the mornings when I am in the fog of sleep still, I can just look at this paper and hopefully get going instead of feeling so overwhelmed by the million exercises I could do that I do nothing.

The Beard Challenge — Day XVI

I was hoping I could stick to my guns and be done by now. I haven't. But I still like guns!

The weather is looking spotty all week, which keeps me indoors and not doing any cardio. I am going to make up for it with weights, but with my home gym torn asunder, I will need to be a little more creative.

I met with my health coach (Part of a health program at work. I love my job!) yesterday and she reminded me that muscle will burn fat. She isn't concerned about my weight, but would like to see the muscle/fat ratio change. Me too.

I have a couple of ideas I need to look into. One is the Nike Fit program on my iPod. It gives workouts that usually require minimal equipment. The trick is remembering that I have it at 5:30 in the morning. But that might be a big help right now.

Eight pounds. I'm only eight pounds from shaving the mangy cat off of my face.

The Beard Challenge — Day ??

Weight: 162.2

Dammit. Routine is the hardest thing to keep. I get a couple of good days and then fall right off of the wagon again. Today is a great example. Rain. No outside cardio for me, and I won't do it indoors because I am spoiled.

The return of my weight can easily be attributed to a weekend trip to Bear Lake and the associated eating like shit.

So, we'll get going again tomorrow (we = me and my love handles) or tonight if I am properly motivated.

The Beard Challenge — Day VIII

Weight: ??? (I was in a huge hurry this morning and spaced it. Shaved my neck instead!)

Short post today. I am going for a run on my lunch break. Which is now.

The Beard Challenge — Day VII

Weight — ???

Yowza. I wouldn't call the weekend a total bust, but it was a partial. Friday had no workout love. Just too busy and lazy in the morning, I ate like crap, too. Saturday was a good day. I missed my strength training in the morning, but Smarty Pants and I went for a nice three mile hike. I came home and got hip deep into the task of re cabling my road bike. Sunday, well, Sunday was spent painting. The morning was a bust. I have a nasty mosquito bite that got infected and actually kept me awake itching. I finally succumbed to Benadryl, which made clawing my way out of bed and being more than a lump of crap next to impossible. I had a spark of inspiration to go on a road ride, then remembered that my road bike was not finished — I completely forgot I have a cyclocross bike hanging from the ceiling...

Which brings me to the subject of habit. My current habit is waking up and staggering downstairs to watch TV until I have enough coffee in my veins to function beyond rudimentary grunting and farting. By then it is too late to do anything other than hoe in the garden and then go to work. These aren't necessarily bad habits, just not very productive. (Except the garden rocks right now!) Breaking old and establishing new habits isn't easy, but it is going to be necessary if I ever want this hairy creature off of my face.

The Beard Challenge — Days II & III

Day II weight: 164
Day III weight: ???

Work happened again. Other than some cardio and core work on Wednesday morning, I didn't get much work in. So, nothing to really talk about. Then I got to bed VERY late because I was up all night working.

Thursday was better. A little bit of core in the morning because that is all I had time for after a late night working. I forgot to get a weight but I am sure that it was higher than I would be happy with. A decent mountain ride in the evening made up for missing out in the morning.

Building some momentum feels good, even though I am easing into a routine a little too slowly. Other than a night of pizza on Wednesday, I have been more mindful of my eating habits also. It's all a process.

When I started my beard penance, my goal was to return to 150 lbs. That is doable, but I that is also a race weight and I don't have any racing scheduled — other than maybe some cyclocross this fall. I think getting under 155 and staying there for a week is going to suffice. I just hope that the beard isn't concealing a double chin.

The Real Day I of the Beard Challenge

Perhaps I got ahead of myself. I titled yesterday as Day I of the Beard Challenge. Which it was. But I didn't chronicle anything. This post is the first. Did you notice that I am using Roman numerals as my counting method? This could get really obnoxious.

Starting weight this morning: 164.

How did yesterday go? Just okay because truthfully, it is going to take a monumental effort to change my morning routine of coffee, the news, and gardening. Still, I managed 30 minutes of jumping rope, weights and core work. Work was pretty busy, and I missed my running window. After dinner, I trimmed and mowed the lawn which is saying something as my lawn is pretty good sized. Finally, I made it out for a 30-ish minute run.

So not too bad. As far as nutritional changes, I am focusing on water intake and fixing to start throwing cookies away when they come into the house.

The "Serious" Beard Challenge - Day I

I know I have been down this road before, but the beard has GOT to go.

This time I'm serious you guys.

Just so you don't have to go back through time, which really wouldn't take too long since the frequency of my blogging efforts is rather sparse, I'll regale you with a bit of history. A couple of years ago I found myself putting on some extra weight. Then a little more. And a little bit more. Pretty soon I was sitting at 165 pounds, which for my 5' 7" frame isn't bad if I never wanted to go up a hill ever again without wanting to punch myself in the ball sack or had pectoral muscles and biceps worth mentioning. Since neither are the case I wanted to lose weight. Hair has been a good motivator before, the last time I grew my hair long and vowed not to do more than trim the ends before I did I Half-Ironman distance triathlon. It worked. I trained and did it. So, this time, weight loss was the goal. Since my hairline has receded further I decided to grow a beard. I would keep the beard until I hit 150 pounds. That was two years ago....

That's right. I have had this stupid beard for nearly two years. I refuse to shave it until I lose the weight. I would consider just getting below 155 pounds and shaving it now. Maybe I have thus far failed because shaving isn't as sweet of a goal as that triathlon. I dunno. But I have been slowly (obviously) building toward critical mass — both physically and mentally — and I think it is time to get serious.

So here I go. I am starting today. I am going to chronicle this mess, day by day, until I shave it off. I may miss a few entries, but I have got to rid myself of this thing and I need some sort of accountability — even if it is only to myself on this page.

Why do I want to shave it when I still get compliments? The beard is hot. I hate riding through bugs and wondering what is crawling through it. Plus, I really want to see Smarty Pants' face when she sees me for the first time after I shave it, my beard replaced by an awkward tan line....

Tomorrow I will write about what I did today. It won't be a comprehensive list with calories and everything I eat. It will include nutrition and exercise overviews, plus the days' weight which I will obtain nekkidly on the scale in the morning. Today's weight was 164 pounds by the way.

Let the game begin.

What Do Superheroes Do When They Aren't Superheroing?

I was thinking about superheroes the other day and something occurred to me; what do superheroes and super villains do when they aren't up to anything heroey or diabolical? Sure, sure, sure, they are busy planning their next scheme or training or searching for bad guys or working at the Daily Planet. I get that. I'm talking about the more mundane stuff. And not every one of them has an alter ego that they can use to escape with. What about them?

Let's say that The Joker gets away from Batman and a few days later decides he wants a latte. But Batman knocked the snot out of him and maybe he just isn't into confrontation. Does he put on a costume and head to Starbucks? Does he just go for it as is and risk it, hoping he doesn't have to take out any cops or has another run in with the Caped Crusader? Would he pay for it or steal it?

What about someone with a really ornate costume like Thor. What if he has to take a crap? Do they crap on Asgard? He's a God but he eats. Wouldn't he crap, too? Would he have to take off his armor? Would it magic off of him or would he spend five minutes groaning and taking it off whilst hopping from one foot to the other? I'm sure he has to take off his cape, unless he drapes it over the toilet. I'd leave the helmet on if I were him. I would grab the wings when I bore down...

What about Aquaman? Does he ever wash his suit? Just take it off and hang around with his Aquawilly floating there while he does his laundry. Maybe he has a robe he wears.

Bane. He wears a mask that Screenrant.com claims "provides conduits which Bane uses to pump an enhanced steroid known as “venom” into his body. The venom serum gives Bane wildly augmented strength and stamina, but as a side effect it also makes him dangerously psychotic." Fair enough. So what if he wants a sandwich? Does that guy even eat? He's human, but if he has a venom injecting mask stuck on his head, I have to think there is some integration that would make feeding difficult. Perhaps he is so intent on revenge and the wanton destruction of Gotham City food for steroids is a worthy tradeoff.

Do any of these superheroes and villains have sex? Because there are a lot of limitations in costumes and gamma-ray affected anatomy to make it difficult, if not outright impossible. Like Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique is blue and has the nude/scaley thing going, but Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique doesn't wear clothes. Does that mean Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique is an exhibitionist? Or does Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique not have any goodie bits to view. Sure, Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique can "change," but...

Anyway, just some insight the next time you sit down to watch Captain America. Who incidentally....

I'm Here!

I'm still here! Which is not to say that I am back. Around is maybe the better way to put it.

Honestly, I didn't realize that I had not written about anything since September. But I lead a droll life, so there isn't much to mention. Just the holidays and a great winter of snowboarding with Smarty Pants who has taken to skiing like a fearless little duck to water. I age every time I go and watch her careening down the slopes with a careless abandon held only by those that have never crashed hard enough to bend backwards into the shape of a horseshoe. I didn't make it skate skiing either, yet.

Which brings me to this windy and reasonably wet spring that is taking it's time to be sprung. Now, in the waning days of May I find that I have been on one mountain bike ride and but a handful of road rides. Why not more? Part weather, part busy, part broken sewer pipe that cost $6,000.00 dollars to fix! Part turning 40 (eeeek!). But mostly I have spent the little free time I have training to run another marathon. The Ogden Marathon, specifically. And by marathon, I mean the 26.2 mile monster. Not a 5k held on the same day.

Now I know that you are just dying to know how it went. And I am going to tell you in my next installment. Which will happen in fewer than eight months.

I promise.

Why I Don't Write More

And I'm back for another surprise installment. My blog is like Forrest's box of chocolates like that, you never know when you're going to get a new one. This mess started out as a way to chronicle the ups and downs in my sporting life. Sure, I've strayed off that course a wee bit but not very far, nor often. Honestly, I feel like a whiny crier face every time I log in as of late.

The trouble is, my sporting life hasn't been all that interesting the past few years. I have a big year then I take a year off. I had my big half iron triathlon and XTERRA four years ago. Yay! Took a year off. Last year was LOTOJA and I think I did a race report, but training was so boring I didn't want to relive the drudgery and crotch rash of eight hour rides. This year, another year off. So it follows, that this blog is going to sit idle.

I've thought about taking it into new realms. Talking about my attempts at golf, the monumental suck of running, Smarty Pants' soccer games ... whatever I have material for. I like guns. I could talk about guns. Politics and the destruction of the country? I could talk about it but I wouldn't like it, and neither would many of you enjoy my perspective. Plus, if I ever need a new job this blog may be plumbed by a prospective employer. In the words of Axl Rose, "Where do we go now? Where do we go?"

I'm not sure.

But this blog, however infrequently I contribute to it, does serve a purpose. It helps blows the cobwebs off of my brain and keyboard when new words for work just aren't coming through. See, this being creative shit isn't easy. I mean, it's probably easier for those like me than it is for a great many people. Just like math is easy for some people and their comprehension of something as unholy and formulaic as Algebra makes me want to punch those people in their windpipes — so to speak.

Still, I think I am going to keep plugging along. I'm going to make an especially big attempt to spend some extra time here in the coming months because winter. And I have a season pass for all the snowboarding I can handle. I'm hoping it all will ward off the seasonal affect disorder that I have officially diagnosed myself with. (Hey, I have a psych degree.)

On the sporting side, I have been running a bit and the legs are starting to come around, at last. What with LOTOJA last year and sort of an off year prior to that, I had lost my stride. But I have been earnest in making a return to running. Even tentatively planning some events next year — As I write, more and more topics come up. I still want to learn to skate ski this winter. Seriously considering trying to learn to play guitar. House projects that almost certainly will bring calamity from which hilarity will flow — which is why I'm here.

Weight Loss Update!

Though I didn't officially say I was going to chronicle my weight loss, I may. I may because I could not at any time. I like to be unpredictable.

My last weigh-in on Thursday was 163.4 pounds on the home scale. This morning was 161.2. Yay?

It could be dehydration. I rode Skyline Trail yesterday with gearing I am not used to and too tall for the extended climb. I was crawling all over the bike to get to the top. But I made it. I had to, the truck was on the other side of the mountain.

Still, I like to think it was the running and riding the past few days that made it happen. So, if it was a fluke, we'll see. I took today off because I am beat from yesterday. But I'll hit it again tomorrow.

Clean shaven here I come...

The Beard that Keeps on Giving

I'm over the beard.

I'm tired of the Duck Dynasty references. The hipster jabs. Really tired of the gray in it. Drying it, trimming it. Combing out the snarls.

Yet the beard remains. It remains because my back fat remains. My weak attempts at weight loss fail. The 10 pounds I wanted to lose to shave it have now become 13 pounds.

But I am out of the rut I was in. Now, I'm just busy doing ... stuff. Projects and work taking my exercise time. Not that I am battling to find more time, mind you.

I need goals. I need to have an end before I can start. Climbing onto my bike for a ride is great, but the furthest thing from my mind is an interval. No goal, no schedule. Just flitting along day by day. It has merit, you know.

Still, it's time to lose the weight and shave the beard.

Why I Hate the Gym

As Dog is my witness, I hate the gym. Not the going to the gym part, mind you, I like the lifting weights and having more equipment available lets me to push beyond what my modest home gym allows. I guess what I am getting at is this, I hate the people at the gym.

Not all of them, I guess. But most. Nearly all in fact. I'm sure that, when they aren't staring at themselves and flexing in the mirror, most of them are way cooler than their overt narcissism lets on. And I would almost guarantee that many of them are very considerate, maybe even stopping at a crosswalk to let people cross. But you would never guess it when they pick up the biggest dumbbells imaginable off the rack, take one step backward, and proceed to exercise. They then slam the dumbbells back on the rack and flex. While I wait for them to move away from the rack so I can retrieve substantially lighter dumbbells. Sometimes, they can't contain their agony and vocalize it through grunts and groans during their reps followed by a resounding slam when they drop their weights to the ground from on high. Dude ... bro...

It isn't just men either. Women are just as bad, albeit in other ways. Many ladies at the gym have a misguided paranoia of "bulking up" and seem to enjoy lifting weights in a manner that takes up as much room as possible instead of just flopping on their backs and grunting it 2 or 3 max reps with 10 minute recovery like dudes.

Example: I'm hitting the gym because I'm fat the other day and a lady comes over and starts doing this weird push up move, but instead of just doing a simple goddamn push up, she starts swinging her legs around and over the back of her head. At first I though she was coming onto me via some strange African mating ritual, then I remembered that I am fat and beardy. In other words, instead of taking up the amount of space needed to perform a proper push up, she is taking four times that amount. Now me, I am using an 18-inch box for jumps and mountain climbers, a kettle bell for woodchoppers and the exact amount of floor needed for push ups. And I'm tucked neatly away in the corner, looking out at the sweaty, bulging, flexing masses with my eyes wild.

As I finish my second set, I just sort of turn away from the tai chi push up lady. But notice her move the jump box back about 10 inches to the wall and she starts jumping rope.

?

Now, I, uh had that shit there for a reason. I didn't want to jump up on the box and smack the wall. I wanted it where it was so that if I overcooked my jump I would fall farther, faster, and smack the wall in a much more dramatic and painful fashion.

I picked it up and moved it back, making sure she was watching. Then finished up my last two sets, slid the box back against the wall and walked away. I then watched jump rope lady use 40 feet of gym, passing two classroom doors and making people avoid her while jumping rope. She's trying to lose some baby weight, not fight Apollo Creed. I saw another doing a similar thing with split squats. Down the length of the building and back. Guess doing this shit in place doesn't call out to everyone that they are exercising in booty shorts and a skimpy sports bra enough. Just need that affirmation...

And that was just Saturday. I can only imagine what it will be like when I go during a busier time. When I can straighten my arms without my eyes watering again I'll let you know.

The Rut, Part II

This rut is EPIC.

I don't want to do anything. At all. And the stuff that I do is at half speed. I don't even sleep that great. And I have no explanation for any of it.

Maybe I am bored with the normal things I do and need some new challenges. A couple of the few people that I bother with my whining have told me I could be depressed. Maybe I just want a break because I've been training and competing for a long time. Other than working through a couple of injuries and Hannah being born, I haven't even slowed down very much. In spite of my current level of sloth, it isn't like there still aren't goals and challenges that I want to take on, this year.

For example, I think I want to run another marathon. It would be fun to do some mountain bike racing like the old days. And I really want to do the XTERRA long course this year. And maybe another half Iron triathlon before finally going for a full Iron. Nothing beyond my reach if I can start training.

Maybe daylight savings will be my savior. It kicked in yesterday so we will find out soon.
